Just so you’ve been forewarned, tires and wheels can be a costly and frustrating part of a restoration project. By the time you pay for new tubes and mounting, you can easily sink $350 to $600 into a pair of rear tires, depending upon the size and the desire to replicate the original look.

Of course, Ford tractors are unique in that they were equipped with rubber tires from the start of production, beginning with the first 9N models released in 1939. Low-pressure pneumatic tires hadn’t even made an appearance on a farm tractor until six years earlier, in 1932. Allis-Chalmers actually initiated the concept when the company mounted a pair of 48x12 Firestone airplane tires on a Model U. By 1934, all of the leading manufacturers offered rubber tires, even though the country was in a depression.

Consequently, by the time Ford and Ferguson were ready to introduce their first model, rubber tires were standard equipment and well accepted. The irony is that Ford actually took a step backward when the 2N was introduced in 1942. In order to continue tractor production when rubber was vital to the war effort during World War II, the 2N was equipped with steel wheels for at least a year and a half.

Ford is somewhat unique in that virtually every model built from 1939 through the 1960s uses a two-piece wheel that consists of a wheel and a rim center. The rim and center could be mounted in different configurations to adjust tread width. This configuration also makes it easier and more economical to replace a wheel. Even if the rim portion of the wheel is rusted out or damaged, the center portion is usually fine, which means simply replacing the wheel itself at a cost of around $100 to $150.
